One of the strongest impressions ever left on me was the moment when I discovered that my mentor, Dianne Lang, was living life under a hair enhancement. We had been attending a beauty convention and were rooming together. Watching her unclip her top piece before bed humbled me. “How could I not have known?” I wondered to myself. We had been working alongside each other for a couple of years!
I learned that Dianne had incredible thinning on the top of her head. She cleverly disguised this with a variety of hair enhancements that had me convinced she was changing her style every season. “We’re all going to grow up together,” I thought. “I need to be ready for when hairloss becomes a priority with my clients.”
In 2018, Glass Door Salon held a Surface Pure Color workshop. An out-of-town stylist who attended noted my leaning towards all things natural, my tendencies towards compassion, and my shadow (A.K.A. my basset hound Esther). She told me to look up Sherri Renée. Supposedly, we had a lot in common – including having a salon dog – and I could explore alternative hair with someone who is as obsessed with quality control as I am.
In comparing Sherri Renée’s enhancements to other types of alternative hair (from trade shows to online markets), I could immediately see that Sherri Renée’s engineering designs weren’t just superior in make, material, and customization, but they also weren’t exclusively trend-focused. While certainly within her power to do so, her enhancements weren’t solely designed to make every guest look like a TikTok influencer. Rather, they are customized to help a guest feel like him or herself. As many of my guests are engineers, government contractors, scientists, etc., not only do I want to help them stay fresh and current, I want to help them recognize themselves when they look in the mirror. Not all of my clients are trying to attract millions of followers on social media by keeping up with the latest fads! (Not that we couldn’t…)
Though I was eager to learn at Sherri Renée’s feet, I had to pass an interview before being permitted into an early 2020 workshop. Well, we all know what happened to our 2020 plans, don’t we?
Trying again, and passing a second interview, I was admitted into her February 2023 three-day workshop alongside my work partner and fiancé, Noah Hatton. Noah has thirty years in the hair industry and a significant portion of his history includes working with extensions and enhancements to satisfy the accounts for whom he was working. Between my color skills and his design experience, we discovered that we make a great pair in transforming hair enhancements into believable, wearable, everyday styles!
On the third day, our workshop project was to get this enhancement to look like it was always a part of the mannequin’s original hair.
Before jumping into private room, one-on-one consultations, we decided to invest in our own designs to increase our practice in custom designing enhancements. After twenty years in the hair industry, turning Noah’s enhancement into believable hair was both challenging and exhilarating!
A couple of months later, we had the opportunity to do the same with my own fringe enhancement. What do you think?
So Glass Door Salon is officially welcoming enhancement consultations! Some guests have temporary hair loss; some, long-term. I plan on wearing my enhancement when my roots are looking unsightly and I can’t touch them up for a couple of weeks. Whatever your motivation, Noah and I are ready to serve you!
