A Night of Volunteering

The forecast was calling for an evening snowstorm. Glass Door Salon was on the fence as to whether we should brave the roads and perform our annual night of haircuts for the homeless or if we should cancel due to weather conditions. Ultimately, we decided to move forward, but only with the volunteers who felt safe enough to do so.

What a night! There was no lack of interest and appreciation for our services! Floris United Methodist Church was hosting over 100 individuals, providing dinner and keeping them out of the elements.

Last year, we noticed an uptick in requests for fades and really wished that we had a licensed barber on our team. Shout out to Omar of Dulles Fade Masters in Herndon for volunteering his barber services beside us this year! What a wizard with the clippers! We couldn’t have done it without him.

My eight and 12 year old boys joined us for the first time as well, keeping the floors clean with a steady broom. On our way home, they acknowledged that they would have never suspected these guests were homeless based on sight and conversation alone. It was a valuable lesson not to “judge a book by its cover” because you never know the struggles that people are hiding.

It blesses my soul to have a team of compassionate stylists who perform these services with joyful hearts. Glass Door Salon currently has the capacity to hire three more experienced stylists.
